Climate Action 100+ is a collaborative five-year global initiative that requires investors to sign-on to a public statement (below) that sets out the commitment from investor signatories and expectations of the companies on the focus list. To date, 225 investors with more than USD $26.3 trillion in assets under management have signed on to the Climate Action 100+ Sign-on Statement.
Climate Action 100+ Sign-on Statement
Background
We, the institutional investors that are signatories to this statement, are aware of the risks climate change presents to our portfolios and asset values in the short, medium and long term. We therefore support the Paris Agreement and the need for the world to transition to a lower carbon economy consistent with a goal of keeping the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
Through this initiative, we aim to fulfill the commitment made in the “2014/15 Global Investor Statement on Climate Change” which stated that “…as institutional investors and consistent with our fiduciary duty to our beneficiaries, we will work with the companies in which we invest to ensure that they are minimising and disclosing the risks and maximising the opportunities presented by climate change.”
Commitment
We believe that engaging and working with the companies in which we invest – to communicate the need for greater disclosure around climate change risk and company strategies aligned with the Paris Agreement – is consistent with our fiduciary duty and will contribute to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.
The initiative aims to secure commitments from the boards and senior management to:
- Implement a strong governance framework which clearly articulates the board’s accountability and oversight of climate change risk and opportunities.
- Take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across their value chain, consistent with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global average temperature increase to well below 2-degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
- Provide enhanced corporate disclosure in line with the final recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and sector-specific Global Investor Coalition on Climate Change Investor Expectations on Climate Change* (when applicable) to enable investors to assess the robustness of companies’ business plans against a range of climate scenarios, including well below 2-degrees Celsius scenario, and to improve investment decision-making.
Working through partner organisations, Asia Investor Group on Climate Change (AIGCC); Ceres; Investor Group on Climate Change (IGCC); Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC); and Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), we will together monitor the progress that companies make towards these goals. We are committed to working collaboratively through this initiative, using a range of engagement approaches to ensure fulfilment of the above-mentioned goals.
*Global Investor Coalition on Climate Change is a joint initiative of four partner organisations that represent investors on climate change and the transition to a low carbon economy: AIGCC (Asia), Ceres (North America), IGCC (Australia/NZ), and IIGCC (Europe). The existing GIC Investor Expectations sector guides cover oil and gas, mining, utilities and auto manufacturers. They provide additional sector-specific disclosure recommendations, particularly regarding the oversight of public policy positions. The series will cover steel, chemicals and cement by Q2 2018.

AXA CEO Thomas Buberl: #OnePlanetSummit: Why AXA is stepping up the fight against climate change | LinkedIn
Every day, I measure the impacts of climate change on our policyholders. The frequency of climate disasters has increased five-fold over the last 50 years and the cost of related damages has skyrocketed (to $100 billion in 2015). The time for debate is over. Without resolute and immediate action, we will not be able to contain the global rise in temperature to below 2° C above pre-industrial levels, as enshrined in the Paris Agreement.
As the CEO of one of the largest insurers and asset managers in the world, but also as a father, I take this responsibility seriously. Like my predecessors, I believe that AXA must be a leader in the fight against global warming. This is why the Group has decided to step up its efforts to fight climate change by presenting ambitious measures on December 12th at the One Planet Summit in Paris(#OnePlanetSummit).
I am pleased that French President Emmanuel Macron has invited AXA to join the event, alongside important personalities who are committed to this issue, like Bill Gates and Michael Bloomberg. The fight against global warming requires the commitment of everyone. The One Planet Summit is the right time and place for us to pursue our commitment to deal with the greatest challenge of the 21st century.
We can act now
Climate change is not inevitable. The workings of the global economy and our way of life play a key role in accelerating global warming. We can take action, in particular by cutting the production and consumption of the non-renewable energies responsible for global warming, starting with coal.
After becoming an industry pioneer in 2015 by moving to gradually exit the coal industry, AXA is ramping up its efforts and will divest an additional amount of > €3 billion invested in carbon-intensive energy producers (coal and tar sands). Moreover, AXA will no longer insure any projects that involve coal-fired power plants, the extraction of oil from oil sands, or associated pipelines.
In addition, from an initial target of 3 billion euros, we will quadruple our green investments to 12 billion euros in 2020, which is double the recent recommendation made by Christiana Figueres, the COP21’s chief climate negotiator (see details of all our measures), whose actions I applaud.
The fight against global warming requires the commitment of everyone, working together. We can do this through collaboration and partnerships, but also by setting the example. With the measures we have just taken, we are sending a strong message: the fight against global warming is certainly complex but we can take committed action. Everyone, at every level, can act.
